Now, you know that we are not exaggerating when we say that there is a lot to see and visit.<\/p>\n<p>During the Roman times, Vila Vi\u00e7osa was known as &#8220;<em>Callipole<\/em>&#8220;. Afonso II,\u00a0 said \u201cenough is enough\u201d and rescued the town that was called Vale Vi\u00e7oso, at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Later, D. Afonso III granted a foral (letter of feudal rights) that defined the actual name of the town &#8211; Vila Vi\u00e7osa. Some years later, D. The people ran away and asked for refugee in Borba\u2026. (Borba is a town, located to the side of Vila Vi\u00e7osa \u2013 the distance is 5 km) neighbors on one side, on other side &#8211; were the Spanish. And as we say in Portuguese \u201cde Espanha nem bom vento\u2026\u201d (There is not even a nice wind coming from Spain).<\/p>\n<p>The war with the Spanish neighbors ended later &#8211; after the victory of the Battle of Aljubarrota, that served as a lesson to our \u201c<em>hermanos<\/em>\u201d and put an end to their wishes to concur our beautiful Portugal\u2026 at least for some years!<\/p>\n<h4>Episode 4: D. Nuno, O Contestavel<\/h4>\n<p>After the Victory of the Portuguese over the other part of the habitants of the Iberian Peninsula, Vila Vi\u00e7osa became under the possession of the great D. Nuno Alvares Pereira &#8211; one of the responsible people that kept the Portuguese border as it is until nowadays.<\/p>\n<p>After this, in 1461, Vila Vi\u00e7osa became part of the Bragan\u00e7a Dukedom.<\/p>\n<h4>Episode 5: Town of Dukes<\/h4>\n<p>The constitution of the Bragan\u00e7a Dukedom gave a start to a prosperity period for Vila Vi\u00e7osa. The construction of the famous and remarkable <em><strong>Pa\u00e7o dos Duques de Bragan\u00e7a (The Palace)<\/strong><\/em> also contributed to the great prosperity of the town and was a decisive moment for choosing Vila Vi\u00e7osa as a headquarter of the Dukedom.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-863 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/rotadomarmoreae.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/6-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rotadomarmoreae.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/6-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rotadomarmoreae.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/6-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/rotadomarmoreae.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/6-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rotadomarmoreae.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/6-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/rotadomarmoreae.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/6-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/rotadomarmoreae.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/6-219x146.jpg 219w, https:\/\/rotadomarmoreae.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/6-50x33.jpg 50w, https:\/\/rotadomarmoreae.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/6-113x75.jpg 113w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As a result, Vila Vi\u00e7osa was granted with e new foral by the venturous D. Manuel I.<\/p>\n<p>The dynastic crisis that explained the coming of \u201cnuestros hermanos\u201d to govern our country in 1580, did not stop the prosperity of the Dukedom of Bragan\u00e7a and, overall, of D. Jo\u00e3o II, the 8<sup>th<\/sup> Duke of Bragan\u00e7a.<\/p>\n<h4>Episode 6: A town of Kings and Queens<\/h4>\n<p>Exactly this great man from Vila Vi\u00e7osa, d. Jo\u00e3o II, the 8<sup>th<\/sup> Duke of Bragan\u00e7a, after the <em>Restoring of the Independence<\/em> in 1640, assumed the throne as D. Jo\u00e3o IV of Portugal. Vila Vi\u00e7osa was the birth place (hometown) of the \u201cRestorer\u201d\u2026and we are very proud of this fact!<\/p>\n<p>Not less symbolic and a reason for pride, is the fact that the Restorer, King D. Jo\u00e3o IV, crowned Our Lady of Conception as the Patron Saint of Portugal in 1646. Catarina de Bragan\u00e7a, the daughter of D. Jo\u00e3o IV, and that was born in Vila Vi\u00e7osa, became Queen of England after marrying King Charls II. She is also famous for introducing the tradition of the 5 o\u2019clock tea \u2013 the afternoon tea is the tea of the \u201cauntie Catarina\u201d from Vila Vi\u00e7osa.<\/p>\n<p>If you are looking for hearing more curiosities and histories of this kind, we suggest our <a href=\"https:\/\/rotadomarmoreae.com\/en\/passeio-a-pe-por-vila-vicosa\/\"><strong>Walking Tour in Vila Vi\u00e7osa<\/strong>.<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Episode 8: One misfortune never comes alone\/ When it rains, it pours\u2026 big episode<\/h4>\n<p>The big earthquake in 1755 gave results even here, and Vila Vi\u00e7osa, as the whole region, suffered from the quakes that destroyed a lot, but as we are hard as a stone (marble), we were ready for more trouble.<\/p>\n<p>As one misfortune never comes alone, after the wars with the Spanish in 1383-1385 and 1580-1640, Vila Vi\u00e7osa also suffered from the hands of the other side of the Pyrenees <strong>\u2013 <\/strong>when Napoleon decided to try come here but the Portuguese gave him a quick lesson who is the boss!<\/p>\n<p>But when it rains, it pours \u2013 Napoeon was not happy and tried again several times to enter and during three years 1807-1810 was shown the way back three times! \u2026<em>arr\u00eate mon ami Bonaparte, ici c\u2019est\u00a0 Portugal!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And to be honest, in exchange of a lot of Porto wine, we guaranteed help from our <em>best friends forever<\/em> \u2013 the English and from the famous 1<sup>st<\/sup> Duque of Wellington \u2013 Sir Arthur Wellesley, whose help was decisive for sending back home the French.<\/p>\n<h4>Episode 9: Back to the future!<\/h4>\n<p>After everything went back to normal, Vila Vi\u00e7osa also continued its normal life, as a place for aristocracy.<\/p>\n<p>The last years of the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century were marked with the frequent visits of D. Carlos and D. Amelia in Vila Vi\u00e7osa. D. Carlos, that was killed and this fact led to the end of the Monarchy \u2013 thus Vila Vi\u00e7osa also lost influence as a sociable place of the Royal Family and their court.<\/p>\n<p>From that time, until now, there were several outstanding townspeople (called calipolense) that made the name of the town famous \u2013 as Florbela Espanca (a poet), Henrique Pous\u00e3o (a painter) and Bento de Jesus Cara\u00e7a (a scientist).
